Q: Can Chiropractic neck adjustments cut off blood to the brain?
I just went to the chiropractor for the first time, and he twisted my neck to both sides, resulting in a number of pops. I got up and they went to give me more x-rays, but I started to feel woozy and saw a bunch of colors. I heard everything they said, but lost control over my body and collapsed. I woke up on the table, feeling cold and dizzy. He said it could be an endorphin rush, but I have read things that suggest otherwise.

Could this be a mistake on their part?

A: Improperly done, this neck snapping can tear arteries in your neck. I’m not saying all chiropractors are bad medicine, but I certainly don’t like the thought of you passing out. I highly recommend you see your regular doctor and make sure this chiropractor didn’t damage anything.

Q: I went to a chiropractor who had no paper on the exam tables!?
I went to a chiropractor’s office today, and he did not have white paper on the tables. There were about 20 people in the office, and I was so grossed out. When I went in to the exam room (he was busy shuffling people around in the other rooms and giving a sales pitch to the new people), I looked around and saw no paper. I ran into the bathroom, and took paper towels and soap and rubbed the table down. When he came in, he put a tissue, YES A TISSUE, on the head piece! He does the upper cervical C-1 treatment, and I wanted to get this procedure done since it is gentle and not like regular chiropractic care – popping and cracking. He spoke so fast, and had me take xrays, then did an adjustment, and then took 2 more xrays of the head. I think I got ripped off because I paid $600 when I left, and he doesn’t take insurance. With swine flu about to possibly erupt come fall, and staph infections so prevalent, I’m sure there were dozens of microcosms on those tables, xray machines and office armchairs. Staph aureus is very common in dr’s offices and it even gets on the dr’s neckties. EW! I’m so grossed out, I don’t want to go back (I’ve never seen anything like this before!); however, I want to protect the elderly people I saw going in and out of there. And there were some other pretty gross people in there as well…who knows whether they might have head lice or anything else for that matter? I read a report that says chiropractic tables are notorious for staph, and they should be scrubbed down with a disinfectant. Frankly, I’ve never seen a table without paper on it. Should I report him to the board of health?
The sarcasm isn’t appreciated at all. My daughter had a severe MRSA infection (that is staph) from a cut on her knee & was gravely ill, & I contracted staph aureus in a hospital ER. You can get MRSA infections in the hospital just fyi, and my aunt died from one after colon surgery. The tables, phones, blood pressure cuffs, all contain staph. And yes, while the majority of dr’s offices & hospitals have not been spotless all these years, there weren’t the superbugs that are out there now. A parent at our school gave me this article. He’s the head of infectious disease at a university hospital in new england. They anticipate a large outbreak of swine flu in the fall, and if your dr doesn’t clean his stethoscope or wash his hands, it can easily spread especially in the elderly. As for staph in chiropractic offices, perhaps this might help you:

A: *They generally don’t. It interferes with the adjustments they have to make and it gets all tore up. They disinfect the tables after each patient. So relax. I can tell from the answers how many people actually do use chiropractors.

MRSA generally comes from nursing staff who are lazy at hand washing and sterile technique between patients. Same for how you contact staff. If you are really concerned talk this over with them at the next adjustment. Work with them not against them. Myself, I would rather have a table disinfected than just having them pull paper over the table. It saves the trees as well. Hope this helped calm your fears. And you are right to be worried about such things. It will mean the difference in staying healthy.

Q: hello, I have been suffering from l-5, s-1 disc herniation pain…even on meds, any advice for bulging discs?
hello, in the last 5yrs i have been suffering incredible back pain, as my l5 s1, lumber/lower/sacral areas have 2 herniated discs. i have been taking percocets now for 2yrs and The pain has been under control with the use of meds and anti inflammatories, traction/table decompression and now we are adding chiropractic car at the advice a pain doctor. im asking anyone here if they have had any chronic back injuries or pain like this related to the discs in the back. if so, why after years would my doctor send me to his partner for chiropractic care? i have no confidence in chiropractic care for this type of injury that has lasted years and is getting worse. i cant see how manipulation adjustments will work when the the discs are herniated and how can this change anything at all? ive had epideral injections that have only aggravated the injury leaving me couch ridden in pain, but they keep pushing them. my doctor has advise me that i will be on pain meds the rest of my life as its degenerative in nature. i went and got a 2nd opinion from a doctor named lawrence rothstein whom has pioneered the laser discektomy procedure where the laser is inserted via a camera, the laser is used to remove the part of the disc that is being compressed thereby reducing the pain. I have seen this procedure work for 2 patients successfully whom were able to discontinue pain meds, they were very happy. im just very confused as to how to proceed as i also hear lots of horror stories and patients suffering from multiple failed surgeries referred to as surgery syndrome etc. i would like to find out if anyone knows of any procedures that have worked for them to alleviate herniated disc pain. taking meds and treating the symptoms takes its toll, and doesnt fix the problem. any ideas relating to herniated discs?

A: You need to understand disc anatomy and what happens. The disc is like a inflated car tire, had a tough outer core, tyre and inside has air, or in our case, jelly. The outer core bursts and the jelly pokes through. As we age, the jelly dehydrates, normal natural part of aging, happens to everyone, that is why you never see ‘old’ people at The Olympics. Therefore the idea is to get from the age of the bulge to 60-65, when the jelly has vanished and all will be pain free. When the Doctor stated degenerative in nature, dehydration is what he means. All the discs will dehydrate, that is why at 20 we are six feet tall and come 65, we are only five feet eight inches tall. We shrink in height. How one deals with it? I am on the Fentanyl Patch, because the jelly is near my nerve roots to legs, bowel and bladder. I will be on the patch at least until I am 65 and I have to accept that. I go Aqua Jogging and Pilate’s to keep up my core strength, deep tummy muscles that hold the spine in alignment. Once the spine is in the correct alignment held in the correct position, firm, steady than the chances of me putting the disc under extra strain, stress, allowing the jelly to bulge out further and hit the nerve roots, is unlikely, so the pain is reduced.
They never offered injections, let alone surgery because I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis and am Osteopenic: on my way to brittle bones. Therefore, drugs now and until I take my last breath. Best of Luck
