Q: Pain managment- what works for you?
I already asked you all about Spinal Fusion, what my doctor is recommending, but I am going to wait as long as possible based on the answers I got. Since 1993 I have dealt with my back pain. I have done it all- Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Massage Therapy, Physical Therapy, Tens unit, Nerve Ablasion (for Facet Joint pain). I just had my annual MRI and my Spinal Surgeon(one of the best, Dr. James Reynolds of Seton Spine Center in Daly City CA) and he said he had bad news. It was worse than thought- now 4 bad disks, one bulging and impenjing on my nerve, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, and spondlyosis.

About 3 years ago, I decided on my own to rid myself of the Class 1 & 2 opiates such as the Duragesic Patch and Oxycotin. Plus, a miriad of anti depressants and sleep aids. I figured out that Dr.s have an obligation to write out pain prescriptions if you are complaining about pain that is interfering with ones life and during a moment of clarity, realized I was inducing myself into a state of mental impairment along with my physical. So I spent a year detoxing myself off the meds and decided that I would do whatever I could to stay on only the Norco and Ibuprofen and a TENS unit at all costs. Even if it meant not leaving the house. I am trying to be proactive in my own pain managment.

So here is the question. How much Norco is considered reasonable and safe? I cannot walk even an hour and I am in pain 24/7. The Norco I am taking is 1 pill 6x per day. The Norco is 325 ml of Aceteminophen. Unfortunately, my medication tolerance is raised so after being on THIS prescription for 5 months, and Norco for about 18 months total. I need to do something. Is asking my doctor for 8 per day an okay thing? I know he will give it to me, but I want to know if any other person in the med field or someone who takes this much can tell me what they think. Also, I take 800 ml of Ibuprofen 3 times per day.

I see my doctor tomorrow but I don’t want him to just give it to me without doing a bit of my own research. I hope you can appreciate my fear after being on so many opiates for so long and the very long year it took to get me off.
Sorry, Norco 10/325- didn’t know there were different strengths? Are there?

A: Yes you can take 8 per day of Norco just make sure with the acetaminophen you not exceeding 4000mg per day.
I have several severe pain disorders and have been in pain since 1993 24/7, i have a high pain tolerance and really dont remember what having no pain feels like. I take pain killer when i wake up and at night, none normally during the day unless it gets to bad. I myself have tried everything out there, the one thing i hated or i should say nearly killed me was blocks done in my neck. Surgery is an option but i like having feeling and the surgery would prevent me feeling again, i rather feel the pain than nothing. I just deal with the suffering, i find things to keep me busy, i live life no matter how bad it hurts. I even train horses, i own a horse rescue it has been my dream for a really long time. Helping the horses helps me, my mind stays busy, tho i hurt more the rewards i get make it worth it.
You do what you feel is right for you, you know your body. People look at me and if you didn’t know what i had i look normal, they cant figure out why i have to take these pills…I’m not a complainer, but if i ever said something is hurting its 10 time more than any normal person can handle, and i just take it easy till i can function. I have even had people saying oh you shouldn’t take the pills you will become an addict, well i haven’t changed my dose in this many years nor the amount i take, i just tell them to F O they couldn’t handle living in my body they would have killed themselves a long time ago…Oh my I’m ranting here. Just do whats right for you and who cares what others think is the point I’m trying to get across…You hurt, you do what you need to do and good luck to you.

Q: What can I do to end my back pain?
So I’m a full time male gymnast and I’ve had back problems for about the last 5 years and I don’t understand why. I’m 16 and I’m super strong and flexible cuz that comes hand in hand with gymnastics. In September, I was at the Olympic Training Center for a National Team camp and I had some back pain while tumbling on the floor, already used to pain, i kept going and working out the rest of the week long camp. The trainers and doctors at the Olympic Training Center took x-rays and didn’t find anything. Continuing to work out in pain, I went to a back specialist in January cuz the pain got so bad and I was having troubles with simply bending over. I was diagnosed with spondylolysis according to a spec scan, the most sensitive type of bone scan. Then we followed up with CT scan and nothing was found. My doctor told me that the fracture was there but isn’t bad and it was caught early. Its now June and I’ve been in physical therapy since April and I do all of my exercises and I’ve been released to start working out and training again. Now that I’m training again, and very lightly, the same pain is starting to come back and its scaring me and my physical therapist says that my muscles aren’t used to being worked like they are and to just keep going. At this point, I know the difference between pain and soreness due to exhaustion and lack of use. This is the beginning of pain. I’ve consistently gotten acupuncture and soft tissue massages and chiropractic and I just don’t know what to do anymore. It’s killing me that I can’t do the one thing Iove pain free and meds and ice/heat don’t work. Any ideas?
Also, the pain doesn’t hurt on my bones or vertebrae. The muscles around L-5 and around my pelvis and hip hurt.

A: Usually a spondylolysis is aggravated by lumbar extension. It is also much more common in gymnasts than the normal population. If the minor spondylolysis becomes a full one, it can progress into spondylolisthesis, where one vertebrae starts to slide forward on the one below it. These are not always painful and a spondylolysis is not guaranteed to progress into a spondylolisthesis.

The bottom line is that continuing the activity will probably continue the aggravation and pain.

The only other thing I can think to try right now (1:23am) is rolfing.
