Q: What age do your start worrying about the chiropractic health of your child?
and start popping their back for them.

A: lol, I already do! The other day I picked the boy up and he tried to swing himself back (to hang upside down) and I hear “crack, crack, crack”. It was horrible, but then I thought “wow, that must’ve felt good”.

Q: What is the best health insurance for someone who wants good chiropractic coverage?
I am shopping for health insurance for my family (my husband, myself, and our baby). I believe that chiropractic care is an important part of wellness, but I’m having a hard time finding a program that sufficiently covers chiropractic work. Any suggestions? Anyone have an insurance plan that has great chiropractic coverage?

A: health-quotes.isgreat.org – here is my health insurance plan. As I remember they can provide such a service.

Q: Is chiropractic worthwhile for health improvement without specific health issues?

A: Chiropractic may be beneficial for mild back pain, in much the same way a good back massage would. However, chiropractic has never been demonstrated to alter the course of any specific disease entity. If the chiro starts making specific health claims, such as being able to cure your asthma, hypertension and diabetes, etc, then you need to get up and run away from them.

Any Chiropractic “treatment” should be focused on a specific musculoskeletal issue. So, periodic “maintenance” adjustments in people who do not have specific musculoskeletal symptoms will do nothing to improve over-all health. If your back is healthy, it does not need routine manipulation to stay healthy.

There is no good evidence that they are anything more than glorified massage therapists.

To the chiro’s, show us evidence to the contrary.

EDIT
@ sahajrob
Regarding the Bakris hypertension study. This pilot study is not convincing.

The study design was poor for starters, the authors claim it was a double blind study, it evidently wasn’t. In a DBS neither the people doing the study nor the subjects know who is receiving placebo or actual treatment but in this study the investigators knowingly applied either treatment or sham intervention. It’s less than clear from the methods if the same investigators then performed the blood pressure recording and if this was the case, there is obviously room for bias.

Also, BP fluctuates all the time. Short term spikes in hypertension are not thought to cause the same effects on the body as BP that is consistently high. When making a diagnosis of hypertension, this is best done with ambulatory readings (over a period of 24 hours) to get an accurate analysis of BP. If lower BP was observed based on just a few readings after the study, one cannot conclude that high blood pressure has actually been reduced significantly enough to have an over all effect on health and the need for anti-hypertensive medication eliminated. How long did this SMALL reduction in BP last for?

“14 mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure and an average 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure” was observed, this isn’t a huge drop. This can very easily be confused with normal fluctuations.

Finally the trial was quite small. Even the authors themselves said that no firm conclusions can be drawn on a study this small. So to mention this study is quite pointless and it really does not contradict what I has said. Also you said yourself, the questions wasn’t about a specific health issue… :)

“Anyhow your post is off topic as the question was 4 general health NOT specific health issues. Just a rant as I see it.”

“Health improvement” is vague. If there is no specific health concern, then I am not sure what health needs improving? And as I stated in my answer, there is no evidence that routine manipulation of the back helps the back or health in general. I’m unsure what the questioner is referring to…. diet and lifestyle? Prevention of illnesses? My answer wasn’t just about specific health claims, however I did point out that any chiro who advises he can help with any of those conditions mentioned is best avoided.

And there is no good evidence that chiro helps asthma.

Q: What is chiropractic and its philosophy on health care?
I am doing a research for work.

Thanks.

A: A health discipline whose practitioners believe a properly aligned spinal column is the primary contributor to better health.

From Wiki:
Chiropractic is a health care discipline and profession that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, under the hypothesis that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system.

Q: Does chiropractic treatment have any health benefits?
Is it scientifically proven, just like mainstream medicine?
Or is it in the same category as homeopathy, reflexology, acupuncture, etc?
Is it reliable? What does it do actually?

A: well there was a government study on the best treatment for back pain and it found chiropractic to be the most successful followed by exercise..allopathic treatments were down the list.

I had 4 severely herniated disks in my back from 20 plus wrecks and also being run over by a car and the neurologist said I needed immediate surgery which I refused.

I had to use a wheelchair for anything pass 10 yards and was so bad if I moved in bed 1/2 inch I would scream with pain. It took me 15 minutes to walk tot he next room with the help of my sons and I could not take a shower for 4 or more months because I could not lift my leg high enough to get in due to intense pain that went down to my ankle.

The neurologist became so angry I would not do surgery, he yelled down the hall after me after I said I would try conservative treatment with my chiropractor (as I knew he fixed me before) that “you’ll be back” he said “you will be in too much pain to stand it.”

My chiropractor in 12-15 months got me from that to walking 45 or more minutes. I will never be normal due to all my wrecks and injuries and my back hurts when I stand but the improvement was tremendous and it always works for me too.

It is also supposed to keep you healthier by fixing spinal subluxations that block the nerve flow to whatever area that nerve is connected to by removing the pinched nerve status and this increased nerve flow helps fix organs connected to a nerve at C-2 or L-5 or T-3 or where-ever the problems with the slipped disk is,

the study I first mentioned apparently angered the AMA as they successfully removed a study to be done after that on neck injuries and whiplash where chiropractic also does well.

Long ago they did all they could to stop chiropractic like lying about the chiropractic college and some chiropractors sued and won that they tried to ruin the chiropractic business.

Usually when this happens, it has something to do with the alternative health practice having lines of people going there and doctors losing business as the naturopath or chiropractor is more successful in helping the sick person and thus people go there.

If it works like alternative health and chiropractic does, if it is a lot safer than traditional medicines like these things are, and if it is cheaper and less drastic like they are, I personally don’t really care if it passed some science test.

Although I do not personally believe in homeopathy, I once heard of a reflexologist who had overfull waiting room and line out the door (who was subsequently arrested due to complaints by allopaths who want the exclusive profits in this country) and I would assume all these people kept going there because it worked.

Many years ago, when we first started hearing of acupuncture, doctors traveled east and observed people receiving surgery with no anesthesia during surgery and I imagine that says something about it having some benefits or truth to it..it shocked and amazed those that traveled there and watched it.

Alternative health has cured the most incurable of illnesses unlike the allopaths in mainstream medicine

I would never go to a doctor for my back pain as I have found something that works better, is cheaper and less toxic than the anti inflammatory drugs that permanently damaged my mom’s kidneys and lead to dialysis and 9 resulting heart attacks (it increases heart attacks 30 times) and subsequent death.

I first went to a chiropractor in 1971 in a wreck before my marriage as my ex husband convinced me as back then doctors would terrify you and tell you they would break your back/neck and stuff and were very dangerous, but his back would lock him in the bent over position and his blind chiropractor would fix it..he said he watched people in the waiting room go in pain and come out better and that convinced him it was good and he convinced me and I have went ever since..for what 37 years. I so trusted him I let him work on my toddlers.

Q: What is the general opinion about alternative health care such as chiropractic?

A: I love my chiropractor. He has worked wonders with my twisted neck and scoliosis. I don’t care what anybody says about them. If you find one that helps you, what’s the problem?

Q: What do you think about the discussuin by this doctor of chiropractic and Cardiovascular Health?
I think it should be watched and can help all kinds of people of all ages live longer. What do you think of his concepts? I thought that each part had very valuable information that I really did not understand before completely.

A: The information he provided can easily be obtained by picking up a good pathophysiology & biochemistry book. Interesting that he did not mention the genetic component of T2D. Lots of people are obese and do not have T2D yet majority of people who have T2D are overweight indicating a genetic and environmental component.

The chiro provided a great explanation of insulin, glucose and IR but then later said that insulin binds glucose? Insulin binds insulin receptors causing a range of actions one of which includes the translocation of GLUT4 to the surface membrane of adipocytes and myocytes. Good explanation though.

I agreed with the role of the food production companies however people need to start to demand ‘healthier’ options, low salt, less added sugar. Until the people start to demand this it will not occur (example is low fat products).

America, ‘we’re kinda a country of excess…’ ya think?

He had a very interesting spin on the role of cholesterol and atherosclerosis development, I would like to see the research that supports this view.

I would have liked to know more about what he advises for diet and exercise therapy. It is known that good exercise and diet can reverse T2D nothing to new there however, significant micro- and macrovascular damage has probably already occured unfortunatly. This highlights the importance of picking up pre-diabetic states such as impaired fasting glucose & impared glucose tolerance. I do agree that many physicians do not turn to diet and exericse which her refered to as ‘alternative’ medicine. It is a shame medications are usually the first option. Why don’t people ever get referred to a dietitian for diet changes, why does it have to be alternative medicine with supplements and herbs? Is it because people would prefer a quick fix instead of putting in the long term effort and getting the results?

Integrated health would be nice, more research into T2D would be nice, healthy food production would be nice as would preventative medicine.

I found an interesting article regarding insulin resistance
The Insulin Resistance Syndrome: definition and dietary approaches to treatment. G Reaven. Annu Rev Nutr 2005;25:391-406

Q: Looking for great chiropractic/health marketing campaign.?
Need some ideas to make a funny commercial or a great marketing campaign to attract new patients for a chiropractic office. I have tried newsletters, flyers, business cards, yellow pages, internet yellow pages and magazines which is typical and boring. Looking to step out of the box with new and great ideas. Anyone have any great ideas?

A: You need to position yourself as a full-service health visit. Not only do you have the chiropractic but get some skills in putting together a healthy diet and lifestyle for patients. You need to forget the boring stuff and do radio advertising. You don’t need a rap station but I would concentrate on maybe country, easy listening, or talk radio. Your demographic would be adults 35+ or adults 35-54. That is a demo that you can afford on an AM station I’m sure. Rates are lower. The audience is loyal. No funny commercials either. You are a doctor so make your commercials appealing. You might do something like: This is Dr. Judy Wilson from the Wilson Chirpopractic Center in Greenfield. Did you know that high blood pressure can many times be lowered with a healthy diet? Come see me and let me help you get a healthy lifestyle. We are more than chiropractic, we are your friends with answers in the health field.

Q: Do you think that chiropractic care should be a part of a person’s regular health agenda?
I have never been to one but I have been hearing that it cures head aches, depression, muscle pain and is great for blood circulation and even pregnancy. Should I start seeing a regular chiropractor?

A: When it comes to chiropractors, I would say that you are in better care with a massage therapist. Sure chiropractors know what they are doing but sometimes they focus more on the bone matter than the tensity of your muscles.

Q: What is your definition of chiropractic?
I’m interested in learning what people believe chiropractic health care to be. Thanks.

A: The practice of realigning a person’s spine in order to improve circulation and general health.

Q: What style of chiropractic practice fits with your idea of sickness, health and wellness?

A: I have found NUCCA chiropractic to be the most effective. I won’t go to any others now. Good luck!

Q: That Do you think about Chiropractic for the optimal health of our spino/neural system?

A: It’s crucial, but you have to find the right doctor.

Q: Independent providers of Health/Medical, Dental, and possibly Vision, and Chiropractic insurance in Michigan?
I am starting a “temp” assignment that has an “indefinite” term in the IT field. Because of this, the “benefits” they are offering me are twice as costly and half as good. I wonder if I should explore independent insurance or not. Any good recommendations? (I live in southwest Michigan if it matters…)

A: healthquotes.awardspace.info – my family have this health insurance. It is affordable and has good coverage for dental issues.

Q: what are your thoughts about chiropractic care?
I’ve had chronic back pain for the past two years. I’ve seen a physical therapist off and on for the past three years with little success. I just started seeing a chiropractor and he gave me a diagnosis of degenerative disc disease. It completely matches my symptoms. I’ve started the treatment and I haven’t noticed a difference yet. It’s also going to cost a lot and insurance won’t help much.

I know that some health care practitioners are skeptical about chiropractic medicine. What are your thoughts?

A: I think Chiropractic care is wonderful as long as you don’t over do it.

I have been going to my chiropractor on and off for years. I went for sports injuries and even whiplash after a bad car accident and it helped. Some things they help a lot with but I was also under 30 when I was going.

My Grandmother had back problems for years and began to rely only on the Chiropractor. He claimed he could cure anything. As she got older she started developing osteoporosis. She continued going, but at that point I think the chiropractor was doing more harm than good.

I’d be careful with anything that has the word “degenerative” in it. Remember some chiropractors adjust by twisting, pressuring or pulling your bones into place, some use manipulations that are less harsh.

If you cannot relax on the table sometimes you can do more harm than good too. That may be why the treatment is not working yet. You have to be really relaxed for certain adjustments. Do not allow the doctor to do any adjustments you are not comfortable with until you are ready.

Q: Does Health Net give reimbersements for chiropractics to their members?
Example if I go to a Chiropractic who doesn’t deal with insurance so I pay for it from my pocket and I have the option on my plan will they pay me back?

A: My adivce would be to use your insurance and have the office call for you before any treatment is done to see if they are in net work with your insurance and what your benefits for chiro are.. Usualy 12 to 20 visits a year and a small co-pay some time none depending on the plan.. Good Luck and thank you for choosing chiropractic care..
