Q: where can i go for free chiropractic treatments in the east bay near san francisco?
i am currently without insurance and wondering if there is anyone who provides chiropractic care for free or barter/i can clean their office if need be. Thank you.

A: Well, I can definitely say that none of them would advertise that they do offer free/bartered care if they did (I can’t vouch for the legality of bartering for medical care either), so you probably wouldn’t find one by polling any given group. However, you could probably call up any number of your local Chiropractors and just tell them what you told us and ask if there was any options. Theoretically, the smaller offices might give you the best chance of that being an option, but it might take a lot of cold-calling to find out. Good luck and I hope I helped!

Q: Has chiropractic adjustments treatments help or changed any ones life?

A: I admit that it seems like quackery, but when you think about the fact that the spine protects the spinal cord, which is some of the largest nerve bundles in the body, it makes sense. If one of those nerve is pinched or something, it can reverberate pain all over the body.

Personally, I had foot pain that was so severe I couldn’t go to museums, theme parks, etc. I could barely walk, couldn’t stand for long periods of time, or exercise. I started seeing a chriopractor regularly and the foot pain is gone. I tried orthotics (4 pairs over 12 years) and nothing ever helped. I am too young (25) to be on pain killers for the rest of my life. Chiropractic saved me years of agony.

One more thing, chiropractic is good for muscle pain caused by vertebral misalignment. But sometimes muscle pain is caused by something else, so massage will make it feel better than chiros will.

Q: alternative to expensive chiropractic treatments?
Hi,

I was in a minor car accident and the doctor said I will need 18 visits. The at fault insurance company is covering only 4 visits. Is there anything i can do as i will not be able continue after the 4 visits. Any suggestions on alternatives.

A: First try some of he suggestions offered here by the other answerers.. talk to the chiropractor. I am on medicaid and they only cover 12 visits per year. I was recently in a serious car accident where I suffered fracture in neck, back, multiple sprains and strains and lacerated internal injuries to organs.

I need at least weekly chiropractic visits to get better,. I do not feel allopathetic doctors can help me. I talked to my chiropractor and he told me he would charge me the same as medicaid does which is currently $21 but he had told me earlier he would take $14 and his mother receptionist told me last visit it was raised to 21 and I would have to pay that but I insisted on talking to him and he told her he would take $14 as he knows I would qualify as a hardship case that could not afford treatment otherwise. Now I have known him over 25 years and given him a lot of visits from my previous 20 or so wrecks, but it is worth a shot. He said that they are allowed to give hardship rates to 10% of their patients by law. (my car insurance was exceeded by massive hospital bills immediately leaving me no money from my car insurance for care).

I had a herniated disk in my back four times..so severe it was the worst he ever worked on and my neurologist said I needed immediate surgery. I refused. He yelled after me in anger..”you’ll be back..I guarantee it..you will be in too much pain but my chiropractor greatly helped me going from a wheelchair to being able to walk 30 to 45 minutes.

It took many visits..3 a week for over a year but I am walking and not screwed up with back surgery.

The reason it takes so long is that though they realign the back/neck into the right place again the muscles have been stretched by the accident and they snap back to the wrong place again needing another adjustment..with time they stay in the right place longer and longer until one day you are better,. I urge you to try to get more visits.

But if you cannot, then I recommend this. if they will pay some doctor, try physical therapy or try to find an osteopath who uses the electric stim and hot packs,

Also do the suggestions in this answer I gave here..the first product is very good..also do the hot and cold showers as directed 7 hots and seven cold alternating for one minute each (see the directions in the links)..

Q: Can a chiropractic treatment cause nerve damage?
What happens if a chiropractor does nerve damage? What in the body will it change? Will I feel/act different? Will it change the way the brain will work? Is it a possibility of mental retardation/illness?

How would I know if I got nerve damage?
How often does nerve damage happen due to chiropractic treatments? Should I worry about this?

A: I think your question goes a lot deeper. First a chiropractor can cause damage, the same as almost any health care person. There was a segment on 20/20 about chiropractors and neck adjustments. This procedure is very, very close to the procedure for a soldier uses to break the neck of an enemy. There have been some cases where a person was left in serious situations after adjustments. Ake your normal doctor if he uses chiropractors, and what to look for.pp

Q: Why are so many people scared of chiropractic treatments?
Most medical doctors advise you to not go to the chiropractic doctor at all and Many people ask dose it hurt and a million other questions before going if they go at all.I personally think I would be in a wheel chair if not for one of these doctors.I was thrown out of a auto in a wreck and suffered intense back pain. My G.P.C.would only prescribed pain pills. Finally I went to a chiropractic doctor for a series of treatments and improved remarkably at a slow but steady rate. After six weeks I was able to return to my job working at heavy manual labor.

A: First I’d like to thank you for your supportive comments. An ever increasing number of MD’s support and refer to Chiropractors. Many physical therapist utilize manipulation and Osteopaths (DO’s) also use the technique. You rarely will hear from a person first hand who says a Chiropractor made them worse, often it is someone giving their uneducated opinion. There is a Psychiatrist who runs several websites that rip chiropractic ( they all feed into each other!) and he was even sued for putting out false accusations.
Understand that in healthcare, everyone is fighting for a piece of the pie and this often pits different providers against each other. We Chiropractors have the lowest malpractice rate of any doctor and yet people still hang on to this idea that we hurt people all of the time. It just isn’t the case.
We live in a society that has drugs and surgery marketed to us as if the human race didn’t exist before the advent of antibiotics, pain killers and hip replacements. Practicing healthcare now means you treat the symptom, not the problem.
If you find someone who says don’t go to a Chiropractor ask them why. They will respond with ” I went once or twice and it didn’t help” or ” I had a friend who went and they only got worse”. Sometimes this may be the case but it is because of the persons expectations, not the failure of the procedure. Chiropractic, much like physical therapy, is a physical medicine. It isn’t a quick fix and often people present with problems that have been bothering them for years or serious conditions that came on recently and they expect miracle cures that just would defy the laws of nature!
The modern Chiropractor utilizes many methods to treat a wide range of conditions. Unfortunately people only point to the adjustment as “chiropractic” and (usually out of ignorance) state an opinion based on misinformation or prejudice. For every person who claims that they put forth an honest effort through chiropractic treatment that wasn’t favorable I can point to fifty who will say the opposite.
Chiropractic is well accepted both in the community and in the medical world and as people become more aware of the dangers of drugs, poor posture , obesity and the importance of a balanced body, it’s popularity will continue to grow.
Thanks for your question.

Q: Can chiropractic treatments cause headaches?
i’ve been seening a chiropractor for 2 weeks and i’ve been getting headaches in the back of my head – is there any correlation

A: Every great once in a while, my head will hurt a little after an adjustment. Don’t give up on it! If your bones go out of alignment, then chiropractic is your best bet, so that you don’t ruin your discs by walking around out of wack.

Q: Can a claimant pay cash for chiropractic treatment when NYS Workers Comp limits them?
For example: A person suffers a personal injury and is on workers comp. This person receives 4 treatments a month, however NYS workers comp board feels they should only receive 3 treatments per month. Can the claimant pay cash for the extra treatment? Please provide a reference if possible. Thanks!

A: I don’t see why that would be a problem other than coming up with the extra cash.

NYS worker’s comp only want to pay for 3 treatments a month, if doesn’t matter to them if you get more through some other way, except fraud.

Q: Does anyone know of a reason not to have repeated chiropractic manipulation?
I have recently heard that repeated manipulation of the spine can be damaging and weakening in the long term and that anything that can’t be “fixed” by a single treatment needs a different treatment altogether. Does anyone have any personal experience or expertise in this field? I have had a back problem for years and only get temporary relief from chiropractic treatments, now I am concerned that the treatment might be part of the cause.

A: I think it depends on what the problem is, as sometimes it takes a number of sessions with a chiropractor to sort a problem. I’ve been seeing a chiropractor on and off for years, and have always benefited from the treatment, (which is why I go back). Out of all the people I know who have seen a chiropractor, none have had their problem sorted in one session. Why not talk to your chiropractor about your concerns? Or if you’d rather not, see if you can find an osteopath to go to. If it’s a muscular issue, not a bone one, perhaps go to a physiotherapist. It’s not wrong to ask for a second opinion if you’re not sure – after all, your health is important.

Good luck ;-)

Q: what are the risks/dangers of chiropractic treatments?

A: Chiropractic adjustments are one of the safest forms of healthcare. However, like all ‘interventions’ there is some risk.

The most common ‘risk’ is a few days of soreness as the body/muscles adjust to the change in function. A rare risk is the possibility of ’separating a rib’ (known as a costo-chondral separation). This is painful (like a broken rib) for about 3 to 6 weeks, but normally heals on its own without any long-term complications.

An extremely rare risk is damage to the vertebral arteries in the neck. This can result in a stroke-like syndrome. This condition is so rare that numerous studies in the early 1990s were unable to determine how often it actually occurs (scientifically known as ‘incidence’). More people are killed by lightening strikes in the U.S. each year than are injured by this very rare event.

For comparison, it has been reported in the scientific literature that common pain killers like Advil and Motrin KILL at least 16,500 Americans every year (and the number may be as high as 30,000). The Journal of the American Medical Association just reported last week that serious side-effects from prescription drugs cause over 700,000 emergency room visits every year. So, by any comparative standard, Chiropractic spinal adjusting is very, very safe.

Best wishes. Hope this is helpful for you. I am a retired Chiropractor.

Q: Will Medicare cover chiropractic treatments?

A: Medicare Part B covers manipulation of the spine only if “medically necessary” to correct a subluxation (when one or more of the bones of your spine move out of position) when provided by chiropractors or other qualified providers. You will pay 20% of the Medicare approved amount after your deductible. If the chiropractor does not accept assignment (and many don’t) you may also have to pay up to 15% above the Medicare approved amount.

Some Medicare Advantage plans do have chiropractic care as an additional benefit to the policy and some will cover adjustments even if they aren’t “medically necessary”. If you have a plan with chiro coverage you usually pay just a small co-pay.

Q: can chiropractic treatments make back pain worse?

A: Sometimes at the beginning of treatment chiropractic adjustments can make your pain level much worse. This is usually due to the muscles having changed to adapt from an old injury and when the adjustment starts to correct your spine the muscles need to stretch or contract – hence the pain. This can last for several weeks or more but as your back muscles adjust the pain goes away. Also, sometimes a person has osteoporosis and may not know it and then the adjustment can cause pain or even a damaged vertebrae. If you are going to have a Dr adjust your spine and your pain is severe, make sure you trust the Dr, they have taken an x-ray of the problem and that they are not making a bad situation worse.

Q: Anyone been seriously injured as a result of chiropractic treatment?
I suffered a stroke last year as a result of chiropractic manipulation of my neck. I am recovering well but would like to find a support group made up of patients with similar stories as mine.

Where can I find a group to get involved with?
I am in the US.

A: First I would like to wish you well and can empathize with your situation.

There are many reasons why people have strokes. In the majority of cases individuals are “pre-disposed” to have a vascular incident and any extension of the neck has the ability to cause a stroke.

In other words, you could have been at the HAIR DRESSER getting your hair washed or just glancing over your shoulder to change lanes and caused a stroke.

Check the research. The chances of a chiropractor causing a stroke is 1: 4.5 MILLION……. as opposed to tylenol poisoning, which results in 56,000 injuries, 25,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths EVERY YEAR.

There are many studys in current journals that discuss stroke and manipulation of the cervical spine. The conclusion is that chiropractic is safe.

I am not trying to invalidate you, however, to conclude that your stroke was the DIRECT result of a chiropractor and nothing else, scientifically speaking is incorrect. Correlation does not prove causation. There are other factors at play.

I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you forgive the chiropractor who was only doing what he took an oath to do, and that is help as many people as he can.

Q: First time with chiropractic treatments, but I’m in more pain after 6 treatments. Should I keep going?
After my x-ray, the chiropractor said my neck curve was opposite what it should be, and my spine twists a little bit as it goes up my back (acute scoliosis), so he prescribed 3 treatments a week for 4 weeks. I came in with mild back pain and a neck pain only if I leaned my head back.

After the 3rd treatment, I got a horrible persistent neck pain that got so bad I could only turn my head 3 inches in any direction, and I couldn’t sleep. It got better and then flared up to being worse. Now it’s a bit better, but I’m almost a week out from that pain and have been through 6 treatments. He says everyone has ups and downs. Should I keep going? Or could there be something that needs an MRI?

A: You’ve got the usual sales pitch for regular treatments and unnecessary Xrays. Let me guess, he prescribed 3 treatments a week for 4 weeks because that is the maximum amount your plan will pay for?

Chiropractors should never be allowed near anybodys neck, they have caused strokes which have crippled and killed previously healthy people. http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?p=94

You need to see a real doctor, and you may now need a CT or an MRI. You probably just have a toricollis, which is a muscle spasm, but chiropractic will only make that worse in any case. Do not let this quack near your neck again ! Use some heat, maybe some Advil, see a registered massage therapist (gentler, safer, cheaper)

Q: Has anyone heard of chiropractic treatment for infertility?
I have been reading about people who conceived after getting chiropractic care. Has anyone heard about this before? I’ve never been to a chiropractor in my life, because frankly, I thought they were nonsense unless you had gotten into a car accident or were injured, but I feel like we’ve tried almost everything and it could be worth a shot. What do you think?
That is what I have noticed in the past from people I know who have gone to chiropractors. They always seem to be complaining that their back, neck, etc. hurts and they’re always going back.

A: I’ve never heard of chiropractic care to help cure infertility but I have heard about acupuncture. There was an article that came out today claiming the Reproductive Endocrinologist are starting to support acupuncture. I think I will read up about chiropractic care! Good Luck and keep me posted if you learn anything more!! Best Wishes & Lots of Baby Dust!
