Q: my 13-year-old has scoliosis, 24 degrees. CLEAR chiropractic treatment or Spinecor brace, which is better?
For child scoliosis, has anybody tried Spinecor flexible brace or chiropractic treatment by CLEAR Institute certified doctors? Please let me know if you are happy with the result you get.

A: I’d go with a real M.D., not a chiropractor.

Q: How do you deal with/get rid of scoliosis through chiropractic medicine?
I’m speaking for a friend of mine who has minor scoliosis, and whose hips are misaligned because of this. They would like to be able to find a way to cure this through chiropractic treatment and various places (in New Hampshire) where it could be done, and also whether it would be a permanent solution or not. We’d both really appreciate your help on this because its causing my friend some serious pain and frustration.

A: There are many variables. I will assume that your friend is female just because they get scoliosis most often, but how old is she. What is slight? Has it been measured in degrees? Is there disk changes?

My wife has scoliosis, she has an “S” curve. It has improved a lot in the past 13 years since we have been married but I know it will never be textbook aligned.

Chiropractic is, in my biased opinion, the best coarse of action to take. Medicine for pain will only cover the symptoms while the problem degenerates. Allopathic medicine will only weight until it reaches a magic number and then they want to operate. The progression of the degeneration of the condition can be slowed or stopped with chiropractic care, and maybe even improved but your friend will likely be a life-long chiropractic patient.

I have a patient that came to me with a 15 degree curvature. Six months later I retook her x-rays and her curve has been reduced to 7 degrees. (She is 10 years old so did not have significant disk changes) No pain and taller to boot….

I am sorry for whatever negative experience that S P must have had. I am afraid she will never benefit from chiropractic like she could now that someone has turned her off to it.

If she was saying that I am not a real doctor because I don’t give drugs to cover symptoms, then she is right and I would never want to be mistaken for medical doctor. (Love em in a crisis though)
8 years of college, 2 years intern, 4 national board examinations, 1 state exam makes me a “real doctor” Not to mention when the checks come from the insurance companies they are written to “Dr. Michael” Well, maybe S P is the only one who is right, more likely she went into the wrong office. I wish you had come to mine. I am sorry for her bad experience.

SHORT ANSWER: Complete cure, most likely not. Marked improvement, pain free and slowing of degeneration, absolutely yes when chiropractic is properly applied. Permanent? An initial course of corrective care will have frequent visits but likely she will need maintenance ongoing. (Like wearing a retainer after your braces come off)

I pray you find a good chiropractor near you. I am sorry that I don’t know anyone to refer you to in your area.

Q: I am hoping to find someone who has had Scoliosis treatment from a Clear provider. If so what were your result?
My son needs treatment for scoliosis and I am afraid of the surgery for him. I found a Chiropractic solution called Clear Scoliosis Treatment, and am trying to find out if it really works

Q: does anyone know of any new scoliosis treatment besides bracing, surgery, chiropractic or cranial sacral?

A: Well, there’s new type of “brace” which is departure from most..it’s pretty comfortable to wear and easy to hide…In my opinion it’s by far the most effective nonsurgical treatment out there bar none…check out last month’s study on Journal of pediatric orthpedic…it beat out all other braces…

check it out at http://www.myscoliosis.net

ps. Burnout..do date, there hasn’t been any documented cases where a chiropractor broke someone’s neck. What are you smoking?

Q: Is treatment in the chiropractic clinic helpful in scoliosis s curve of 44 degree?
thorasic and lumbar curvature both 44 degree, and the girl has not start menstrating, age 13.

A: Treating in chiropractic clinic would be helpful. But woudnn’t be enough on it’s own…44 degree pre-menarche should be a pretty aggressive case…and she’s already in surgical zone for some surgeons…

My advice would be to at least do some kind of bracing along with the treatment as further progression would definitely land her on a surgical table…she doesn’t have much of wiggle room…

Having said that, yeah..chiropractic would help her spine keep her flexibility and so on…but as I stated, probably not enough at this stage to use as the only therapy…

tell her parents to check out a brace called Spinecor..
does correction all on it’s own and would be enhanced with chiropractic treatments

Q: Can scoliosis be cured with Chiropractic care?
Specifically, can the chiropractic treatments Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP) and Pettibon be used to cure scoliosis?

I’ve had mild scoliosis for years, but recently a chiropractor took a look and said that he could cure it. I was told by doctors previously the only fix was (very harsh) surgery, but that I was not bad enough to require it.
EDIT: I wanted to clarify a few things. A “conventional” doctor diagnosed me with mild scoliosis about 12 years ago. This was in my early 20’s. No cause was ever found (or even searched for, IIRC).

The chiropractor, who I saw recently, says that I do NOT have scoliosis, that I was misdiagnosed, and that it is actually subluxation.

A: A quick review of Cochrane and PubMed
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez
does not show any evidence that chiropractic has any use in the correction of scoliosis, and if a chiropractor has told you he has a cure, he is lying. The CBP technique isn’t true chiropractic, but is really more of a posture retraining program of very dubious merit. It MAY make you appear to stand a little straighter subjectively…but objectively, Xrays will not show any difference. (Chiro believers will claim otherwise, they are as usual, wrong.)
More detail on it here. After reading this, if you still want to go through with it, check your credit card limit…the CBP practitioner will.

http://www.chirobase.org/06DD/cbp.html

Contrary to popular belief…and the delusional belief of many chiropractors themselves…their techniques do nothing at all to the bones of the spinal column. It is physically and anatomically impossible for a human to generate the forces necessary to alter the alignment of the vertebral column.

EDIT
I think the Dr J has basically supported my less verbose, and well informed opinion that chiropractic is of no proven benefit for scoliosis. He should read his answer back to himself…out loud, and slooowly.

Mild scoliosis is pretty much a non disorder anyway, and it turns up as an incidental finding on routine xrays frequently. I very much doubt that doctors would have recommended surgery for mild scoliosis. There really is no proven treatment of ANY sort for mild scoliosis.

Outside of the “subluxation” and “innate” woo, chiropractic is only glorified physical therapy, as the Dr J seems to concede. Physical therapy can help with tight or weak muscles, ligaments and tendons. It is of NO use for straightening a bony spine that is congenitally malformed. If the Dr J has case reports proving otherwise, he should publish them. My informed guess is that 10 radiologists would give 10 different interpretations of whether there was real objective improvement other than in posture. I do not trust chiropractors interpretations of their own xrays as they do not have proper training. (This has been demonstrated numerous times when Xrays are submitted blind to chiropractors vs radiologists for interpretation..chiros routinely find things that aren’t there, and miss important things that are…but the Dr J doesn’t want you to know that)

The rest of the rant was a non sequitur as the question wasn’t about evidence FOR medical therapy such as braces.

A brave try, but fail.

EDIT DOC B
Much of the above applies to your comments as well. Since you whined about it, I have inserted the Pubmed search. I thought it was uneccesary as it is an easy thing for anyone with internet and search terms “scoliosis” “chiropractic” “CBP” to do. Many articles, yes. Not a single one of them showing any efficacy for CBP or any other form of chiropractic. What was your point?? If you actually go through the 300+ you found and think one of them proves me wrong, please lets see it…but I’m not going to. The onus is on the one making the positive claim.

Chirobase and Quackwatch are not outdated, in fact they are continuously updated as new evidence is published. Chirobase is run by a former chiropractor. They are both heavily referenced, and if you disagree with their content, then lets hear your objections to the specifics, rather than a blanket dismissal they are “outdated”
They aren’t outdated, it’s just that Alties don’t have the evidence to contradict so resort to petulant ad hominems and poisoning the well techniques.
——————————
DOC B . Thanks for posting that article. However, it does nothing to support your claim.
-it is not a randomized trial. It even says that in the title
-it is quite small as the MINIMUM number required for valid statistical interpretation is 50 (63 test subjects vs only 23 volunteer controls)
-the Harrison mirror image technique and criteria have not been independently validated and are not recognized by anybody except CBP practitioners. See the chirobase article.
-the control group showed similar improvements in pain to the treatment group
-the xrays were not independently evaluated by radiologists or even chiropractors blinded to the purpose of the study.
-a single small study by believers in an obscure believers journal proves nothing unless the results can be independently evaluated by others in larger better controlled studies. It is 5 years since that was published, where is the followup study??

That’s just what I came up with after a quick once through reading of the summary you posted. I’m sure if I took the time to read the entire article I could find more problems. I’d give it a Jadad score of zero

I appreciate the effort. Fail, just the same.
You might want to look up the rules of chess as well.

Q: Can functional adult scoliosis be treated and reversed?
I have mild adult scoliosis from a traumatic injury, I was wondering if chiropractic treatments and physical therapy could reduce or fix my curve. I believe my curve is around 10 degrees. Thanks!! =P

A: Hi Krissy,

I have structural scoliosis so I’m not experienced with the functional variety. What I’ve heard, though, is that functional scoliosis will either be reduced or eliminated if the cause of the scoliosis is treated. I *believe* that chiropractic treatment or PT could, as you say, reduce or fix your curve. I can’t recommend from first-hand knowledge, though.

Here’s what I’d do, though. I’d get a couple of opinions from both scoliosis specialists and chiropractors. I’d then ask the scoliosis specialists if they think a chiropractor or physical therapist could treat my condition. Be sure to ask the chiropractors how long do they think it will take for treatment.

(Disclaimer) I don’t trust chiropractors to treat scoliosis, partly because I was brought up that way, partly because I’ve heard from other folks about incidents where the chiropractor hurt someone’s back instead of helping it, and partly because I just don’t see how manipulating soft tissue can possibly treat a bone condition where the spine has grown curved. I do understand that its possible for a surgeon to have bad results.

Q: can chiropractic treatment help with degenerative lumbar disc disease?
also bulging lumbar discs, mild scoliosis, mild stenosis. neurosergeon opinion was no surgury unless a wheelchair was imminent

A: Although chiropractic treatment won’t stop the degenerative process, it can help with pain control. Most of the studies that I have read on spinal manipulation indicate that the patients in the SMT groups, even with equivical outcomes regarding pain levels, had faster and longer lasting improvements vs other conservative treatments (just exercise, non-manipulative modalities, analgesics and NSAIDS). As far as chiropractic treatments being no better than PT, well, this would be a matter of personal preference since we are both musculoskelatal specialists, just with slightly different focuses. As far as making a herniated disc worse, anything is possible but this is very unlikely. Natural history will dehydrate the disc over time, but a treatment plan including manipulation will probably help with pain control and improve confort levels in the meantime.

That being said, if you choose the chiropractic route, you’ll first want to find a doctor in the American Chiropractic Association. But this still isn’t a guarantee that they are good. Next, you’ll want to make sure they don’t try to sign you up for any longterm, expensive plans. Also, if they say you have a subluxation, politely thank them for there time and leave. You’ll also want to be sure that they at least can train you in some exercises that will help stabilize your back.

I know this seems overly pessimistic, but like every profession, there are the bad seeds. Think of the auto mechanic that tries to tell you everything needs to be replaced or the brain surgeon who operates on the wrong side. Chiropractic treatments have helped thousands of people and the medical literature is filling up with evidence that smt works, otherwise insurance wouldn’t pay for it and in absence of that, patients wouldn’t pay for it out of their own pocket. We get results, just ask Harvard, who I hear are starting teaching MD’s manipulation in an elective, or PT’s who are already doing it.

Q: Help with scoliosis treatment!?
I’ve suffered from scoliosis for over 15 years and my back has started to bother me beyond belief. I used to go to a chiropractor, which was AMAZING, however, I can’t afford the cost. The military will not cover chiropractic care and I’m unsure of what I should do now for my back. I realize when my back hurts, my head hurts, my entire body hurts!
If anyone (with intelligence) could please help me find some ways to help my back, that would be greatly appreciated!
Please only answer if you have a serious, insightful, honest suggestion.
Thank you!

A: I have had surgery for my scoliosis and the pain is less now i think its the best option for people with scoliosis,
and the pain is not as bad as some say it is so don’t let any horror stories scare you,
and the results are very good if im honest as before my back pain was severe but now its less pain full so i think surgery is the best treatment to avoid future pain.

Q: help please?
Help please?
i need 3 people to give me there opionion on this article
this ian assignment and my test wants to get three opionions from 3 people plus the on i am going to write

What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a term doctors use to describe a lateral curve of the spine. Depending on the etiology (cause) of the scoliosis, there may be one or more curves involved.

Types of Scoliosis

There are two types of scoliosis: structural and functional. A structural scoliosis can be caused by disease, bony or muscular deformities, congenital deformities (those that are present at birth) or improper healing from injury or surgery. A functional scoliosis can occur as a result of injury, muscle spasm, spinal mal-alignment, or the body trying to compensate for spinal problems, such as a herniated disc. Individuals with these conditions tend to “create” a scoliosis as they are leaning to one side trying to find a position in which to relieve their pain.

The curvature of a scoliosis can be mobile, or in more serious cases, can be fixed (unable to move). Cases of immobility are typically the result of injury or a disease, such as polio, that can result in multiple spinal bones fusing together.

The most common type of scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis. This is what doctors look for when they perform spinal screenings on school-age children. The term idiopathic means “of unknown cause.” It begins as a functional scoliosis, but can become structural over time if it is not managed by a health care professional such as an orthopedist or a chiropractor. It is very important to catch scoliosis in childhood before it progresses as it can significantly worsen as the spine develops and the child grows.

More About Idiopathic Scoliosis
Between 60 and 80 percent of cases of idiopathic scoliosis occur in school-age girls, and are usually detected between the ages of 9 and 14. The condition may first be suspected when one shoulder appears higher than the other, when clothes do not hang straight, or when one hip seems more prominent. An initial complaint may be fatigue in the low or mid back after prolonged standing or sitting. Note that pain is a manifestation as time passes, as the ligaments of the spine endure prolonged strain.

Of the 4 percent of children with detectable scoliosis, half will require treatment or continuing medical observation; the other half can be screened in school and simply monitored for significant progression.

What Is the Outcome?
The outcome depends on the site and severity of the curve and the age of onset of symptoms. Complications are related to the type of curve present. The greater the curve, the greater the likelihood of progression after skeletal maturity. A prompt referral to a chiropractor or an orthopedist is recommended in order to institute treatment to correct the deformity or to prevent further deformity.

What Is the Treatment for Scoliosis?
Chiropractic treatment for scoliosis utilizes specific adjustments to the involved areas of the spine. This is combined with therapies such as electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, or intersegmental traction, and postural exercise. The progression of the curve in the spine is monitored very closely to determine if more aggressive treatments are deemed necessary. Chiropractic treatments are designed to focus on the correction of the scoliosis and the prevention of complications. A large percentage of scoliosis patients find relief and correction for their scoliosis deformity through chiropractic care.

A: This article is well-written, well-organized, and contains good definitions of the technical terms. I found it helpful, since it contained information that I didn’t know about scoliosis. All the information that I was familiar with is accurate and well-presented.
I especially appreciate the positive description of chiropractic medicine and its effects. It validates my personal perspective on chiropractic medicine.

Q: What do Chiropractics do to me if i have pain in my lower back due to scoliosis?
I’m getting rather worried about my spine because of the pain i experience on my lower back and sometimes, simply walking can be painful. I’m only 16 and I’m very worried it’ll get worse as i get older. I heard Chiropractics can effectively correct your spine without any medication or surgery. But its cost is also very high. May i know if anyone has had treatments by the chiropractics and who has the same situation as me? What do they do to you? And what are the estimated cost of a whole treatment? Also, will it fully correct your spine so it can become straight again?

A: I think your best bet is to be treated by an Orthopedic dr.
The only hting “right” the dr could do to prevent its progression is measure the curvature of the spine.

Q: can i get cured from scoliosis without operation?
im 25 yrs old and have a 28degree scoliosis and it hurts really bad now. i never wore any cast in childhood. had an accident 5yrs ago and you can say , it (woke up) the scoliosis. i went to chiropractic clinic, but i dont want to go on with the treatment. any help?

A: Doctors usually do not consider surgery until the curve reaches 50 degrees or so. And even with the surgery, scoliosis is not ‘cured’, but it stopped from progressing. And even after my surgery, at times my back still hurts like it did before. And when I am in pain, I take 800mg of Ibuprofen, it helps me, but everyone is different. Some may suggest a brace, but considering the fact that, at 25, you’re definitely done growing, it probably wouldn’t help. My doctor did not suggest a brace for me at 17, because since I was done growing, my spine would most likely return to the way it was before I put the brace on. Have you talked to your doctor about maybe concentrating on how to better manage your pain? I don’t know if this has helped you any, but I hope so. Good luck, hope you get to feeling better.

Also, have you been in Physical Therapy for your scoliosis? This helped a little with my pain.

Q: First time with chiropractic treatments, but I’m in more pain after 6 treatments. Should I keep going?
After my x-ray, the chiropractor said my neck curve was opposite what it should be, and my spine twists a little bit as it goes up my back (acute scoliosis), so he prescribed 3 treatments a week for 4 weeks. I came in with mild back pain and a neck pain only if I leaned my head back.

After the 3rd treatment, I got a horrible persistent neck pain that got so bad I could only turn my head 3 inches in any direction, and I couldn’t sleep. It got better and then flared up to being worse. Now it’s a bit better, but I’m almost a week out from that pain and have been through 6 treatments. He says everyone has ups and downs. Should I keep going? Or could there be something that needs an MRI?

A: You’ve got the usual sales pitch for regular treatments and unnecessary Xrays. Let me guess, he prescribed 3 treatments a week for 4 weeks because that is the maximum amount your plan will pay for?

Chiropractors should never be allowed near anybodys neck, they have caused strokes which have crippled and killed previously healthy people. http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?p=94

You need to see a real doctor, and you may now need a CT or an MRI. You probably just have a toricollis, which is a muscle spasm, but chiropractic will only make that worse in any case. Do not let this quack near your neck again ! Use some heat, maybe some Advil, see a registered massage therapist (gentler, safer, cheaper)

Q: I’m 14 years old and currently having scoliosis?
I’ve got a spinal curvature of 37degrees at the top and 20+ degrees at the bottom and my back aches a lot these days…I’m so anxious right now…I was considering whether or not to go for scoliosis surgery because my brother did it last time……He told me his experience and he said the pain he had after the operation was so excruciating…..I started having minor spinal curvatures when I was 12 years old…over the years it has gotten worse…..I was thinking of going for surgery but my parents told me surgery isn’t the right option for me…..They said it’s too costly and I’ll get a lot of side effects after that…….What shall I do? I’m now undergoing chiropractic treatment……The fact is, it doesn’t help a lot. My spine is more serious than all the chiropractic patients in the treatment centre……..Someone please advise?

A: Haha, I’m in the same boat sister, but I HAD the surgery. I would do it if I were you.
I had it last July and there are no complications or side effects from my experience. I tried out for the volleyball team, and can do anything I want now, it’s not disabling after your spine fuses! However, everyone’s experience is different my dear. Your brothers will be completely different from yours, but now you know what to expect- it’s so much better that way! The doctors know what they are doing and are trained so well! The nurses know how to keep your comfortable, and it’s really not all that bad. It’s an experience! Something that you can look back on and say, “Hey, I braved through that. I ultimately saved myself and look! All is well!”

What’s more important- the side effects, or your overall health?
The surgery hurts, yes! All surgeries hurt, but the fact of the matter is that the pain does eventually go away. I’m so much happier now that I had the surgery, I don’t ache anymore. Although, there is pain occasionally, it’s manageable. I’ve never really heard of Chiropractic treatment for Scoliosis to help cure it. Maybe to reduce pain? The only other “Treatment” option in my opinion is a brace, which no 14 year old girl wants.

Good luck! Like other people have said, trust in God and everything will work out. :)

Q: ways to cope, treatments options scoliosis, asthma, athritis?
I am in my 20’s and falling apart :) I have scoliosis (mild, lumbar and thoracic rotation) and arthisits at various points in my spine. I allso have moderate asthma.

What are some options for keeping the low back pain away? My doctor just says arthritis is progressive and come back when its unbearable/otc meds dont work anymore!

Is there anythign I can do now to slow down or prevent further degeneration? There has to be something, anything than just waiting for unbearable pain!

I take calcium dialy I asked my doc about other supplements she was pretty blaise ‘take what you want theres no real proff one way or the other’ so i have an appnt with a holistic med doc next week but looking for ideas, maybe somehting I cna request that my insurance might cover. They dont cover chiropractic that was my 1st idea :(

A: i suffer with the same but i don’t have asthma. i think i have been every ware for some pain relief i have a t.e.n.s electronic pulse massager that helps i also take fish oil 3 a day the pain clinic put me on this plus pain patchers that you change every week you only get 4 at a time they were very good but they didn’t agree with me so i have to take the panadeine -forte don’t let your doctor put you off ask him to send you to a specialist who deals in this area living with scoliosis is no fun when i was younger my mum took me to the doctors and he told her it was just growing pains
it was not until i was in my forties i found out i had scoliosis but by then it was to late so don’t suffer go to someone that will help you and don’t stop till you do good luck i hope you fined some relief
