Q: Can a chiropractic treatment cause nerve damage?
What happens if a chiropractor does nerve damage? What in the body will it change? Will I feel/act different? Will it change the way the brain will work? Is it a possibility of mental retardation/illness?
How would I know if I got nerve damage?
How often does nerve damage happen due to chiropractic treatments? Should I worry about this?
A: I think your question goes a lot deeper. First a chiropractor can cause damage, the same as almost any health care person. There was a segment on 20/20 about chiropractors and neck adjustments. This procedure is very, very close to the procedure for a soldier uses to break the neck of an enemy. There have been some cases where a person was left in serious situations after adjustments. Ake your normal doctor if he uses chiropractors, and what to look for.pp
Q: Can a claimant pay cash for chiropractic treatment when NYS Workers Comp limits them?
For example: A person suffers a personal injury and is on workers comp. This person receives 4 treatments a month, however NYS workers comp board feels they should only receive 3 treatments per month. Can the claimant pay cash for the extra treatment? Please provide a reference if possible. Thanks!
A: I don’t see why that would be a problem other than coming up with the extra cash.
NYS worker’s comp only want to pay for 3 treatments a month, if doesn’t matter to them if you get more through some other way, except fraud.
Q: Can having Chiropractic treatment make the condition worse?
I have been seeing a chiropractor for a little while now due to neck spasm. It is a different one to the one I saw for a few years and the treatment is slightly different. Over the past month to six weeks the spasms have become worse than ever and I wonder if it is related to the treatment as nothing else has changed.
A: Do you hqve an underlying pathology? I would recommend a trip to the doctor and some x-rays. No more chiro treatments until you know what is going on underneath that skin..
Q: Anyone been seriously injured as a result of chiropractic treatment?
I suffered a stroke last year as a result of chiropractic manipulation of my neck. I am recovering well but would like to find a support group made up of patients with similar stories as mine.
Where can I find a group to get involved with?
I am in the US.
A: First I would like to wish you well and can empathize with your situation.
There are many reasons why people have strokes. In the majority of cases individuals are “pre-disposed” to have a vascular incident and any extension of the neck has the ability to cause a stroke.
In other words, you could have been at the HAIR DRESSER getting your hair washed or just glancing over your shoulder to change lanes and caused a stroke.
Check the research. The chances of a chiropractor causing a stroke is 1: 4.5 MILLION……. as opposed to tylenol poisoning, which results in 56,000 injuries, 25,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths EVERY YEAR.
There are many studys in current journals that discuss stroke and manipulation of the cervical spine. The conclusion is that chiropractic is safe.
I am not trying to invalidate you, however, to conclude that your stroke was the DIRECT result of a chiropractor and nothing else, scientifically speaking is incorrect. Correlation does not prove causation. There are other factors at play.
I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you forgive the chiropractor who was only doing what he took an oath to do, and that is help as many people as he can.
Q: Has anyone heard of chiropractic treatment for infertility?
I have been reading about people who conceived after getting chiropractic care. Has anyone heard about this before? I’ve never been to a chiropractor in my life, because frankly, I thought they were nonsense unless you had gotten into a car accident or were injured, but I feel like we’ve tried almost everything and it could be worth a shot. What do you think?
That is what I have noticed in the past from people I know who have gone to chiropractors. They always seem to be complaining that their back, neck, etc. hurts and they’re always going back.
A: I’ve never heard of chiropractic care to help cure infertility but I have heard about acupuncture. There was an article that came out today claiming the Reproductive Endocrinologist are starting to support acupuncture. I think I will read up about chiropractic care! Good Luck and keep me posted if you learn anything more!! Best Wishes & Lots of Baby Dust!
Q: Is chiropractic treatment mostly placebo? Are there studies to prove the theory of subluxation?
I have seen studies that shown benefits for low back pain. But it seems that it is only marginally better than conventional medicine. So could it be a placebo effect? Also, is the diagnosis of a short leg substantial or of clinical value?
A: Good question, but needs a little bit of refining.
Is chiro treatment placebo? Treatment for what? Back pain or something visceral, ie. diabetes, cancer, heart disease?
The fact is that chiropractic does work for some things, ie. back pain, neck pain, etc. There is not alot of evidence that it works other conditions. I can refer you to a very recent study that recommends chiropractic for acute back pain over other treatments.
CLINICAL GUIDELINES
Diagnosis and Treatment of Low Back Pain: A Joint Clinical Practice Guideline from the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society
Roger Chou, MD; Amir Qaseem, MD, PhD, MHA; Vincenza Snow, MD; Donald Casey, MD, MPH, MBA; J. Thomas Cross, Jr, MD, MPH; Paul Shekelle, MD, PhD; Douglas K. Owens, MD, MS, for the Clinical Efficacy Assessment Subcommittee of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Physicians/American Pain Society Low Back Pain Guidelines Panel*
2 October 2007 | Volume 147 Issue 7 | Pages 478-491
Recommendation #7: …clinicians should consider the addition of nonpharmacologic therapy with proven benefits—for acute low back pain, spinal manipulation;
Spinal manipulation was also recommended for chronic back pain as well. Spinal manipulation is largely done by chiropractors (>90%) and has been shown to be safer than over the counter medication.
This study was done by MD’s, not DC’s (chiropractors) so it is a rather unbiased look at what Dr’s should do for back pain based on the research.
It is not a study on subluxation however. That is a topic that is very broad and the simple answer to your question about the theory of subluxation is yes and no. There are certainly plenty of very plausible theories and studies as to how the function and global position of the spine affect the nervous system and how the increased sympathetic activity affects the end organs. This type of research is being done and is very promising I believe. Check out the work of Harrison at idealspine.com. He is a DC, PhD, etc. etc. I think he has degrees in math and engineering as well. He is a published author, he has been published in Spine a few times. Spine is the most prestigious peer reviewed journal in this area.
Anyway, Harrison does alot of interesting things and shows that there is an Ideal spinal model (published in Spine) and that when the spine is at variance with the normal (just like there are norms for BP, Temp, etc.) there are ill effects on the body such as accelerated arthritis or DDD, pain, and possible even visceral effects (via the effect on the Symp NS).
Good luck in your search for the answers, the more you learn the more you dont know and the more you need to find out.
Why do you ask btw?
ps. Short leg length is very real, despite what your local naysayer may tell you. Lay on a bed and have someone else check for you, check them. Its pretty apprent and you dont have to be scientific to see it. An Xray can also help.
If you have a short leg (I do) you may either have a functional problem of the SI joint, an anatomical short leg, either the tibia or the femur may be shorter than the other leg, or some other problem like excessive pronation of the foot. Short legs exist just like short arms, deviated septums, bad teeth, unequal foot or hand size, or unequal breast size.
The question is whether or not it is of clincical value. That is a difficult thing to say. If your house was not level would that be important to you? If your tires are out of alignment is that important to you? It all depends by how much and what is causing it. It is a hard thing to say over the internet. You can buy a really cheap heel lift and try it out see if it helps. I have a short leg and it doesnt bother me at all. I may not be sensitive to the effects, who knows.
Remember: only beautiful people dont have short legs! Maybe you dont have a short leg, you might just have one long leg.
Q: How effective is chiropractic treatment? has anyone ever had any negative side efffects?
I got adjusted when i twisted my neck and I think my recovery was twice as long as when I just let the muscle relax on its own. I am just curious.
A: I think the chiropractor can solve so many of your body’s problems. I just posted something on here about dizzy spells- I had them really bad for a while and found out that they were being caused by a pinched nerve (which the chiropractor was able to fix!) I would say yoga and chiropractic treatment are the best combo!
Q: In the US, how many chiropractor patients are injured as the result of chiropractic treatment, annually?
The many, so-called, experts on this forum will correctly say, “a very small percentage”, but what is the actual number and who tracks that number and who holds chiropractors accountable for reporting those numbers?
A: I do not know if there is a national register of injuries from Chiropractic treatment. I know I have had some very negative experiences–
4 DOA after having their necks adjusted, 1-manipulated until paraplegic, then released- came to me and I found the cord tumor. 1-whose spine was perfect, but her SKULL needed adjustment, and one who needed ” pelvic adjustment” I will not go into what was being done there. Then there are the claims that adjustment will cure your kid’s Dyslexia, or whatever. I wish Medicine was that simple, and we could cure everything by adjusting your spine. Afraid it just is not so.
Q: Does chiropractic treatment have any health benefits?
Is it scientifically proven, just like mainstream medicine?
Or is it in the same category as homeopathy, reflexology, acupuncture, etc?
Is it reliable? What does it do actually?
A: well there was a government study on the best treatment for back pain and it found chiropractic to be the most successful followed by exercise..allopathic treatments were down the list.
I had 4 severely herniated disks in my back from 20 plus wrecks and also being run over by a car and the neurologist said I needed immediate surgery which I refused.
I had to use a wheelchair for anything pass 10 yards and was so bad if I moved in bed 1/2 inch I would scream with pain. It took me 15 minutes to walk tot he next room with the help of my sons and I could not take a shower for 4 or more months because I could not lift my leg high enough to get in due to intense pain that went down to my ankle.
The neurologist became so angry I would not do surgery, he yelled down the hall after me after I said I would try conservative treatment with my chiropractor (as I knew he fixed me before) that “you’ll be back” he said “you will be in too much pain to stand it.”
My chiropractor in 12-15 months got me from that to walking 45 or more minutes. I will never be normal due to all my wrecks and injuries and my back hurts when I stand but the improvement was tremendous and it always works for me too.
It is also supposed to keep you healthier by fixing spinal subluxations that block the nerve flow to whatever area that nerve is connected to by removing the pinched nerve status and this increased nerve flow helps fix organs connected to a nerve at C-2 or L-5 or T-3 or where-ever the problems with the slipped disk is,
the study I first mentioned apparently angered the AMA as they successfully removed a study to be done after that on neck injuries and whiplash where chiropractic also does well.
Long ago they did all they could to stop chiropractic like lying about the chiropractic college and some chiropractors sued and won that they tried to ruin the chiropractic business.
Usually when this happens, it has something to do with the alternative health practice having lines of people going there and doctors losing business as the naturopath or chiropractor is more successful in helping the sick person and thus people go there.
If it works like alternative health and chiropractic does, if it is a lot safer than traditional medicines like these things are, and if it is cheaper and less drastic like they are, I personally don’t really care if it passed some science test.
Although I do not personally believe in homeopathy, I once heard of a reflexologist who had overfull waiting room and line out the door (who was subsequently arrested due to complaints by allopaths who want the exclusive profits in this country) and I would assume all these people kept going there because it worked.
Many years ago, when we first started hearing of acupuncture, doctors traveled east and observed people receiving surgery with no anesthesia during surgery and I imagine that says something about it having some benefits or truth to it..it shocked and amazed those that traveled there and watched it.
Alternative health has cured the most incurable of illnesses unlike the allopaths in mainstream medicine
I would never go to a doctor for my back pain as I have found something that works better, is cheaper and less toxic than the anti inflammatory drugs that permanently damaged my mom’s kidneys and lead to dialysis and 9 resulting heart attacks (it increases heart attacks 30 times) and subsequent death.
I first went to a chiropractor in 1971 in a wreck before my marriage as my ex husband convinced me as back then doctors would terrify you and tell you they would break your back/neck and stuff and were very dangerous, but his back would lock him in the bent over position and his blind chiropractor would fix it..he said he watched people in the waiting room go in pain and come out better and that convinced him it was good and he convinced me and I have went ever since..for what 37 years. I so trusted him I let him work on my toddlers.
Q: has anyone tried a chiropractic treatment for menieres disease?
A: I don’t have any personal experience with Meniere’s, but think this is a good idea. There isn’t any way chiropractic treatment could directly affect this disorder. It seems possible that nerve or spinal problems in the neck could trigger or aggravate Meniere’s, so chiropractic adjustments might provide some relief in this situation. Along the same line of thinking, its possible that applying a warm, moist, heat pack to the neck/base of the skull would help if muscle tension aggravates the Meniere’s symptoms. If you can spare the money, it might be worth trying a chiro- there’s nothing to lose but the cost of the visit.
Q: After chiropractic treatment for a slipped disc in the back who would you see to continue your recovery?
Golf situation?
A: Continue to see the Chiropractor if you feel it’s working.
But you defiantly should start seeing a Physiotherapist to help reduce pain and strengthen your back to help with the disk.
A pain Specialist can also help for persistent pain as unfortunately slipped disk pain hangs around for ages.
A Specialist Anesthetist can do an epidural steroid injection to help in your recovery also.
You have to keep up the work on a slipped disk.
Q: my 13-year-old has scoliosis, 24 degrees. CLEAR chiropractic treatment or Spinecor brace, which is better?
For child scoliosis, has anybody tried Spinecor flexible brace or chiropractic treatment by CLEAR Institute certified doctors? Please let me know if you are happy with the result you get.
A: I’d go with a real M.D., not a chiropractor.
Q: Is Chiropractic Medicine a legitimate form of treatment?
My mom is seeing a Chiropractor for pretty severe back problems. She is on a very fixed income and her medicare is NOT paying for the treatments.
I have heard in the past that Chiropractors are a bunch of salesmen who dont actually do any good. My mom’s chiropractor keeps asking her to bring friends and family to his practice which makes me nervous. He even had her make a list of people she thought would be interested. No legitimate physician has ever done this so I am nervous that she is being taken. He told her she should begin to see results in six months which is long enough for her to lose a lot of money!
HAS CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT WORKED FOR YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW?
A: Study after study has shown that chiropractic is the most effective and cheapest form of treatment for Back pain. Medicare will pay for 80% of the cost of adjustments, sounds like the chiro is not a contracted provider. in my opinion your mother should see results before 6 months. if my patients dont show a change in 30 days i try something different, but thats just me. your mother may need 6 months of care but if there is no change after say 10-12 adjustments somethings not working. Some people just dont respond. I would try to find her a chiro that is a provider for medicare that will help with the cost and give her a second opinion. Some chiros try to get family members in to educate them because 90% of the population have no clue what we do or why we do it. hope this helps and good luck.
I just gotta respond to the other answers: We dont want to prescribe that would cause our malpractice insurance to sky rocket and we beleive that your problem is not a lack of pain medication but a true problem in your spine that should be corrected not covered up, and to the woman whose mom had to go back every month or her back would hurt, thats great, once a month, how many pain pills would she take a month if she went to the MD, one a day for the rest of her life, yeah chiropractic is the commerce.
Q: Does the Ontario College of Physicians approve or disapprove of chiropractic treatment ?
A: Since nobody has answered yet, I’ll toss in my 2 cents.
Why not call them and ask? I don’t think any of those physicians frequent this forum, so you probably wouldn’t get more than a guessing answer…. but if you call them and ask them directly, they should be able to answer you quickly and easily (even a receptionist there would have a better idea than us).
Q: Is £31 too much to pay for 15 minute chiropractic treatment on feet and tendons?
A: There can’t be many others who pay £124 an hour for a foot massage!
If it involves travel to you, it’s not so bad as it includes a call out charge, but you could pay for a private doctor for less than that.
